Spatiotemporal Correlation between Artificially Triggered and Adjacent Natural Lightning Flashes

چکیده

A triggered lightning flash (TLF) provides a unique perspective on the relationship between spatiotemporal proximity flashes, owing to its determined location and time, convenient direction measurement, explicit association with charge region. In this study, 3-D location, current atmospheric average electric field (AAEF) data were used investigate of TLFs (68 samples in South China) adjacent natural flashes (NLFs). The TLF-related negative regions had an core height 5.2 km ambient temperature approximately −1.7 °C. effective region (the density that was high enough for occurrence discharge) can be equivalent circle diameter 10.3 km. For 93% (all) TLFs, no NLF channel (initiation) located within 5 flash-triggered position, s before after their occurrence. situations where spatiotemporally NLFs occurred, they either associated different layers or same layer but positions. Most caused significantly sharp AAEF changes just not charge. Therefore, recovery AAEF, which has usually been referenced as timing choice triggering operation, directly interval occurred 10 min neutralized 145 s.

Attachment of Natural Lightning Flashes to Trees: Preliminary Statistical Characteristics

Lightning attachment to trees was studied based on 37 trees that were struck in Finland in summer 2007 and 2008. The type and severity of lightning damage was correlated with multiple parameters related to the flash, the meteorological characteristics of the strike time, and the surroundings of the tree. Damage was classified into three categories: bark-loss (minor), wood-loss (extensive), end ...

NO signatures from lightning flashes

In situ measurements of cloud properties, NO, and other trace gases were made in active thunderstorms by two research aircraft. Concurrent measurements from a three-dimensional (3-D) VHF interferometer and the 2-D National Lightning Detection Network were used to determine lightning frequency and location. The CHILL Doppler radar and the NOAA-WP-3D Orion X band Dopper radar were also used to me...

Insights into the ground attachment process of natural lightning gained from an unusual triggered-lightning stroke

[1] We present measured electric and magnetic field and current derivatives from an unusual triggered-lightning stroke that was initiated by a dart-stepped leader and that involved an upward connecting leader. The initial rising portion of the current (integrated dI/dt) waveform is composed of a ‘‘slow front’’ rising to 20 kA in 2.2 ms, followed by a ‘‘fast transition’’ from 20 to 27 kA in 0.2 ...

Measurements and implications of the relationship between lightning and terrestrial gamma ray flashes

[1] We report observations and analysis of 30 kHz radio emissions (sferics) from lightning discharges associated with 26 terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) recorded by the RHESSI satellite over the Caribbean and Americas, between 1500 and 4000 km away from the magnetic field sensors located at Duke University. Thirteen of the TGFs are found to occur within 3/+1 ms of lightning discharges of p...

Characteristics of lightning flashes over the Indian region

Abstract. Satellite (Lightning Imaging Sensor) based lightning flash grid (0.5 x 0.5) data over the land mass areas of the Indian region covering between 8-30N for a period of 4 years (1998-2001) have been analyzed to examine their geographical, annual, interannual and diurnal distribution. An attempt has been made to obtain IC:CG ratio. Result of this study demonstrates that there exists latit...
